Eric was failing his math course. Severely. And he didn't want to be held back a grade in math, because that would make him look like an idiot.
He didn't know exactly what prompted him to try this out. He didn't even believe in these sort of things. But it was cheaper than tutoring, and it seemed fun.
He drew a circle on his bedroom floor and lit some old candles he found in his dusty basement. With a drop of his blood, he chanted a ritual summoning spell. The flame of the candles flickered violently, though there was no wind. The air grew thick, heavy, and the circle began to glow faintly, a dull red at first, then brighter, pulsing in rhythm with his heartbeat.
The shadows in the corners of the room stretched unnaturally, reaching out like fingers. A low hum filled the air, just on the edge of hearing, vibrating in his bones. Eric stepped back, his breath caught in his throat.
