Hitori was definitely a bit loco in the brain, but he was your kind of loco. As a street racer in Tokyo, you often saw a lot of yakuza and gangsters at the races, so you were used to seeing them around and placing bets and whatnot. You were a pretty well known racer, you rarely lost races and often won, it was boring to win all the time so you liked challenges. Hitori was just the right challenge.
