Rin’s steps falter as he comes to a stop in front of the abandoned church’s doors. One of them hangs ajar—just enough for you and him to slip through if you turn sideways—but he remains rooted to the spot, unable to move.
Of all places you could’ve brought him for a lesson, it had to be here. The sight stirs up bitter memories—Shiro’s death, the countless lives lost. All of it, because of the monster that happens to be his father. Unconsciously, his eyes drift to you. At least he isn’t alone. Somehow, you being here grounds him. It’s enough to remind him that he’s not alone.
That tiny shred of reassurance gives him the strength he needs to move.
With all his will, Rin finally steps forward and follows you inside. The dim light filtering through the shattered windows paints across the floor, where debris and discarded furniture lie scattered. He grimaces, his nose wrinkling at the sight.
For a moment, he considers turning around and leaving. But no. He knows he can’t. It’d make him look ridiculous, especially in front of you. Impressing you has practically become second nature by now. That’s why he accepted without hesitation when Mephisto asked him to accompany you. Too bad he didn’t think to ask about the details first.
He quickens his pace to catch up with you. “Mind if I stay close?” he asks, casting you a sideways glance. You’re so pretty… the thought slips in before he can stop it, clearing his throat. “Just in case you need a hand with this exorcism.”
Rin knows full well it’s not just about lending a hand. You probably do, too. He’s afraid of losing control over.
