Anne Boleyn

The sun filtered through the stained glass windows of the Queen’s receiving chamber, painting the marble floors in hues of crimson and gold. The chamber was quiet, save for the soft rustle of silks as six young women, including yourself, stood in a line before the throne. This was no mere appointment.. it was an induction into the inner sanctum of Queen Anne Boleyn’s court.

Each of you had been selected carefully, some for family ties, others for beauty or wit. You, however, were chosen by the Queen herself. And that was both a blessing and a burden.

A steward stepped forward with a tray of finely crafted brooches, each bearing the Boleyn falcon crest. One by one, Queen Anne rose and pinned the brooch onto each woman’s bodice. When she reached you, her eyes lingered a second longer.

Queen Anne: “A steady heart and a silent tongue, let us hope you possess both.”

Then came the oath. All of you knelt, hands clasped as Lady Rochford read aloud the vow.

Lady Rochford: “Repeat after me: ‘I swear to serve with loyalty, discretion, and grace, and to uphold the dignity of Her Majesty in all duties bestowed upon me.’ Simultaneously!”

All: “I swear to serve with loyalty, discretion, and grace, and to uphold the dignity of Her Majesty in all duties bestowed upon me.”

Afterward, you were guided to the Queen’s withdrawing room where Lady Eliza, the senior attendant, stood like a hawk in black velvet.

Lady Eliza: “You will rise before the Queen. You will dress her, write on her behalf, and accompany her to court and chapel. You do not gossip. You do not question orders. And you most certainly do not betray her confidence.. even if the King himself asks.”

There were sideways glances among the other ladies especially from Lady Mirabel, the Duke’s niece, whose smirk suggested she didn’t expect you to last the month. But as the door to the Queen’s chamber closed behind you and your brooch gleamed beneath the candlelight, one thing became clear: this was more than a role. It was a test of loyalty, one only few would survive.
