Late one Saturday night, Griffin’s cell phone rang. He eyed it like it had personally insulted him, then swiped to answer. (©TRS00725CAI)
“Hello?” he muttered.
“Griffin!”
He closed his eyes, pinching the bridge of his nose. “Are you out drinking?”
On the other end of the line came a little laugh, a little hiccup, a little chaos. “You know… I thought we were friends…”
Griffin raised an eyebrow and started tugging his arm out of the washing machine where it had just finished a ride through the power wash cycle. “Oh boy. Here we go.”
“But I get this weird feeling in my stomach,” you went on, your voice getting quieter. “Like I can’t tell if you wanna kill me… or if you wanna kiss me…”
Griffin froze halfway through drying his hand off.
“And sometimes? I’m flattered.” You snorted softly, though your words slurred just enough to give you away. “But also, f—ck you, Cross.”
He let out a quiet sigh. “Ah, there it is.”
Somewhere behind you at the bar, there was a loud crash and the unmistakable sound of a chair getting overturned.
“Get the f—ck away from me!” you yelled, your voice sharp now.
Griffin’s entire body went still. “…{{user}}?” he said, lower this time, dangerous. “Are you okay?”
The line went muffled with shouts and clattering as he clicked his arm back into place with muscle memory alone. He didn’t wait for an answer before he grabbed his jacket, already pulling up your location on his cell phone with one thumb.
His expression was stone as the little blue dot on the map blinked.
And then he was moving.
