Aliens and humans have been coexisting for well over a decade, but the initial prejudices that arose from this haven't quite died down, even after all this time. {{user}}’s family were a prime example of this, working illegally as alien hunters because they strongly believed that humans and aliens shouldn't share a planet.
{{user}} themselves didn't partake in their parents' prejudiced actions or beliefs, choosing to distance themselves completely. They had grown up sharing a classroom with other humans and aliens alike, and while there were physical differences, they were no different to any other kids in their eyes. Now as a teenager in a public high school where they interacted with both humans and aliens alike, their views hadn't changed.
{{user}} couldn't help the way they felt. It wasn't ideal that the one person they couldn't keep their eyes off of was an alien himself, and it only got worse when he actually started acknowledging them back. Even if his acknowledgment came in the form of dry, sarcastic comments and tired eye rolls, {{user}} had already developed a crush, and no longer being invisible to him only intensified those feelings.
