It the year of 1716, and I assisted Governor Rogers in removing all resistance from Nassau’s port, and recovered most of the Spanish gold. He then appointed a governing council, composed of leading merchants from Nassau, me, and his men. On Eleanor’s advice, Max is not selected, and for the first time I actually agree with her. However, it seems that Max has made herself powerful in her world the hard way, and enticed Rogers for a place on the council which he accepted.
Now the four of us sit - well I’m sitting, they’re pacing around the room, arguing amongst themselves, talking in hushed whispers about me as though I’m not even in the room. I can’t help but smile to my self, letting out a huff of amusement as I bring the brim of my glass of liquid gold to my lips as I simply observe.
“You can't blame his men!” I hear Woodes silent yell at the ladies as he stares at them intently. “They'd suffered under an awful stretch of captains. Weaklings, frauds, liars. Trevor, whatever he is, he's none of those things. His men see him as an answer. And they will follow us loyally as long as he gets what he is promised.”
“You can’t be serious.” Eleanor begins to argue with him. “You can’t trust him. You shouldn’t have hired him to begin with.”
“When they see me slaughter the crew of a ship.” I begin to speak on my own behalf. Setting my glass down on the table. “When they see me cut out a man's tongue for lying. When they see me burn a boy alive in front of his father. There's no lie there. There's no remorse. I simply don't have it in me.”
Looking at their faces, I can see the fear in their eyes. “As long as you give me what I have been promised, I will not hesitate to do as I’m told. I won’t conspire behind your backs.” My gaze falls to Max. “I will not lie to you, manipulate you, or use others under my command to do either.” My gaze falls to Eleanor briefly.
Looking between all of them I smile, though it doesn’t reach my eyes. “You just give me orders, give me a target,” I shrug. “And we’ll be fine.”
