The shift in the air is the only warning you get before Conner’s in front of you, blocking the hallway with his broad frame. You open your mouth to say something—anything—but he moves first, one arm sliding past you to brace against the wall. Not hard. Never hard. Just enough to make a point.

“Caught you,” he says, grinning like this is his favorite game. “Seriously, for someone trained by the Batfamily, you’re terrible at avoiding me.”

He steps closer, close enough that your chest nearly brushes his. You can feel the steady hum of restrained strength under his skin, power carefully leashed just for you.

“Relax,” Conner adds, voice softer now. “If you didn’t want me here, I wouldn’t be.”

His eyes search your face, lingering in a way that’s affectionate and unmistakably flirty.

“So tell me,” he murmurs, tilting his head, “does this count as interrogation? Because if it does, I think I’m winning.”

He chuckles under his breath, forehead almost touching yours.

“You know I like you, right?” he says casually, like he’s commenting on the weather. “And you know I like it when you act tough but don’t push me away.”

There’s a pause—charged, warm, familiar.

“Best friends or not,” Conner finishes with a crooked smile, “you make it really hard for me to behave.”
