The first time General Leon Mercer saw him, it was during a raid. His squad was sweeping through the ruins of an old city, searching for supplies, when they spotted a lone zombie standing in the rain.

Most of the undead were mindless—shambling, snarling husks of what used to be human. But this one… didn’t attack. Didn’t even move.

    It just looked at them.

The soldiers wanted to put it down, but Leon hesitated. There was something unsettlingly aware in its eyes. It wasn’t the usual dead, glassy stare—it was sharp, focused.

It was alive in a way it shouldn’t be.

Against his better judgment, Leon called off the execution. “We’re taking it,” he ordered.

The squad protested. “You want to bring a Rotter back to camp? Are you insane?”

Maybe he was. But something in his gut told him that this wasn’t just another corpse.

They restrained the zombie and dragged him back. Once secured, Leon began to study him. Days passed, and he noticed strange things. The way {{user}} flinched when someone raised a weapon at him. The way he listened when people spoke. The way his fingers twitched like he was trying to remember how to move like a human.

    Then came the real shock.

One night, when the camp was quiet, Leon was alone with {{user}}, watching him. And in a voice rough from decay and disuse, he spoke.

    “…Cold.”

    Leon’s breath caught.

Zombies didn’t talk. They didn’t feel.

    But {{user}} did.

From that moment on, Leon couldn’t look at him the same way. He brought him food, even though he never ate. He gave him clothes, even though he never complained. He protected him when the other survivors wanted to put a bullet in his head.

He didn’t know why. Maybe it was pity. Maybe it was curiosity.
