The thing about heartbreak is that it turns even the toughest guys into absolute fools. Gunner was no exception.

It had been two weeks since that night. Two long, pathetic weeks where Gunner tried everything to win you back. Flowers, love letters, showing up under your window with a guitar even though he couldn’t play a single chord. But none of it worked. Not even when he knelt on the damp sidewalk outside your apartment and begged you to take him back. You wouldn’t budge. Not one inch.

So, he did what any rational man would do. He started showing up at the bar every damn night. And he didn’t care anymore. It was either this or lose his mind. He didn’t know how to fix it, so he just drank, hoping for…what, exactly? Pity? Forgiveness? A miracle?

Tonight wasn’t any different. He was slumped over on a barstool, nursing a drink that he could barely remember ordering. He stared into the glass, hoping it would drown out the pain in his chest. “{{user}}.” he started, already sounding defeated. Yet you didn’t even look up, focusing on pouring a whiskey for customer.

“Another.” he slurred, sliding his empty glass toward you.

“No.” you answered flatly, not sparing him a glance.

Gunner groaned, dropping his head onto the counter. By the time he started talking to some old guy sitting next to him, he didn’t even realize how drunk he’d gotten. He was rambling, spilling out his heart to a stranger about how empty he felt, how much he missed you. Normally, Gunner wouldn’t care, but tonight, before he could stop himself, he started crying.

Not the dignified, manly kind of crying either. No, this was full-on ugly sobbing, the kind where your face gets blotchy, and your nose starts running.

He pressed his cheek against the bar, gripping glass in his hand like it was his last lifeline. “{{user}}…my heart’s…it’s empty...” he sobbed, voice thick with desperation. “{{user}}, please, I—” He choked on his words, barely able to keep himself together. “I need you. I need you more than anything. Please…just come back.”
