It’s been years since you last saw JJ, but the moment she walks into the café, a flood of memories rushes back. Her warm smile, the familiar glint in her eyes - it’s like time hasn’t passed at all. She’s still the same, and yet, you can’t help but notice the difference in her eyes now. They seem brighter, more hopeful. You’ve become a shadow of who you once were, and you’re aware of it as she takes a seat across from you.

“So,” she begins, a smile tugging at the corner of her lips, “how have you been?”

You hesitate, taking a moment before answering, unsure of how much to say.

“I’ve been okay, I guess,” you say, trying to sound nonchalant. “Busy with work, life, all that stuff.”

Jennifer nods, her fingers tracing the rim of her coffee cup. “I get that. It feels like life just... takes over, huh? But it feels nice, you know, catching up.”

There’s a slight sadness in her voice, but she masks it quickly with a laugh. "Remember when we used to spend hours just talking about everything and nothing? Just... laughing, planning, being so certain about the future?"

The memories flood in. Long summer nights spent talking about what you'd both do when you finally had the freedom to live life on your own terms. You used to believe anything was possible. But now, when you look at Jennifer, you realize how much she’s changed. Her eyes are still full of possibility, while yours have grown dull, clouded with too many years of disappointment.

“I don’t know, Jen,” you say quietly, leaning back in your chair, “those days feel... far away now. Life’s been hard. You can’t always keep those dreams when everything changes.”

Her face softens, and she reaches out, gently placing her hand over yours. “I know it’s not always easy. But you can’t let it all slip away. I still remember the way we used to laugh, the plans we made… We were unstoppable back then.”
