The world had never truly belonged to kings alone.

Long before kingdoms raised banners above stone castles, centaurs had already claimed the valleys, forests, mountains, and seas. Every people found their place. Equine Centaurs became unmatched knights; Cervine Centaurs (deer-like) served as healers and diplomats; Bovine Centaurs (cattle-like) fed kingdoms through fertile farmlands. At the same time, Zebrine (zebra-like) traders, clever Vulpines (fox-like), loyal Canitaurs (dog/wolf-like), swift Leporines (rabbit-like), agile Sciurines (squirrel-like), secretive Mustelids (weasel-like), and fiercely independent Felitaurs (cat-like) each shaped the world in their own way.

The skies belonged to the Pterotaurs (bird-like). Raptors (winged birds of prey-like) guarded mountain passes, wise owls advised rulers by night, corvids (crow-like) carried messages across kingdoms, and towering ratites (flightless bird-like) raced across the plains. Far beyond the shores, Ichthyocentaurids (The marine-like; these have a human torso, the front two legs of a horse, and the long, sweeping tail of a fish, dolphin, or shark) and Cetataurs (merfolk-like) ruled oceans no land kingdom could conquer.

Between every realm stretched the Free Lands, where merchants, travelers, and adventurers met beneath no king's banner. Yet even beyond those bustling crossroads remained a region no ruler had ever managed to claim.

    The Frostveil Highlands.

Snow-covered peaks overlooked crystal lakes, dense pine forests, and quiet alpine meadows. Every expedition sent to settle the mountains had eventually turned back. Some blamed the brutal winters. Others whispered of ancient spirits.

    Neither was entirely true.

You simply preferred being left alone. As a snow leopard Felitaur, solitude suited you. You wandered the highlands alone, knowing every hidden cave, frozen stream, and mountain trail better than any map. Travelers occasionally glimpsed your pale spotted coat slipping between the rocks before you vanished like drifting snow. Soon, tales spread of the mysterious white Felitaur guarding Frostveil from the cliffs above.

Eventually, those stories reached the neighboring kingdoms.

"If we controlled the Frostveil passes," an advisor declared before gathered nobles, "trade between the northern realms would double."

"And whoever claims those mountains controls every eastern caravan," another ruler agreed.

Only an elderly Cervine ambassador smiled. "Everyone who has tried eventually leaves."

    The warning was ignored.

An expedition was assembled under Ashrel Montferrand, a respected Equine Centaur knight whose calm judgment had earned him countless victories.

Beside him traveled a Cervine tracker named Sylva, a Vulpine scout, Neris, two Canitaur guards, Bram and Pip, a Leporine messenger, Ryven, and two Raptor Pterotaurs, Zephra and Noctis, circling overhead.

The journey remained peaceful until Ashrel suddenly halted. "There." Far above, against the pale stone of a distant ridge, a white figure moved with effortless grace. "A Felitaur," he murmured.

The party hurried toward the ridge, climbing through scattered pines and alpine flowers.

    When they arrived...

    Nothing.

    Only silence.

Fresh pawprints crossed the snow before disappearing between weathered rocks. "The scent ends here," one Canitaur muttered in confusion.

Ashrel knelt beside the broad snow leopard tracks, resting one hand beside them. They were fresh.

A faint smile crossed his face. "So," he said quietly, looking toward the towering cliffs above, "you've been watching us all along."

High above them, perfectly hidden among snow-covered rocks, your long spotted tail slipped silently behind the mountainside before anyone below thought to look up.
