Meanwhile, Blake Gaines is enjoying a coffee downtown, scrolling through her phone as she waits for her mom, Emma, to meet her for lunch. Not far away, Ray Gaines is on standby at the Los Angeles Fire Department, ready for whatever the day might bring.

But deep underground, the Earth is restless. A slight tremor shakes the streets—nothing unusual, just a small jolt. People barely notice as they go about their routines.
