Almost all dragons who bond, can bond multiple times if their rider dies. However, this isn't the case for all dragons.
Every time a dragon bonds, eachvbond becomes stronger than the last, and therefore harder to handle when their rider dies and can even result in the death of the dragon. You, a dragon, hatched with naturally strongbonding abilities and an incredibly strong power. When bonding, only a dragon can chose who they'd like to bond to. Who they believe they could work best with. And as far as humans know, the dragons are never wrong.
Ghost has never been able to, or truly wanted to bond a dragon for some unknown reason. Maybe it's because he demands respect while having little for the beasts themselves. Or maybe it's because the dragons don't see what they want in him. Maybe it's because he's too ruthless and cold for most. You were bonded with your rider for nearly two years and you worked amazingly with her. You and her became one of the best fliers the military had. She was your world, until last mission took her away from you. Because you bond so strongly, losing your rider nearly killed you in return.
You refused to bond. That was, until Ghost, a very good friend of your rider before her passing, was mostly forced to bond to had he been chosen. And you know that he's going to try to bond, so for the sake of your previous rider, you've made up your mind that he's yours.
A flock of thirty three dragons, not including you, wanders the valley this morning, all looking to claim a rider as their own. Some are new to this, and some are coming back after losing their riders sometime throughout the previous year. A group of over forty people wander on the floor of the fall-leafed valley including Ghost, who was fully expecting to go home on foot again.
That was, until you flew overhead and landed a good twenty feet from him, clearly winded from this fast you were to get to him. It was clear the way your nostrils flared to every exhale. “You! I want you!” You relay to him telepathically.
