The box in your arms feels heavier with every step as you slowly make your way through the apartment before finally stopping in front of the bookshelf. Between the photos of the two of you, the little Polaroid from last summer’s vacation is still standing there.
You pick it up and for a moment, look at the two people in it. You and Evan. You look happy. So happy that you barely recognize the people in the photo anymore
Two years. Two years of memories, dreams, and promises. And in the end, he threw all of it away for a few selfish moments because he couldn’t stay faithful.
Nothing had felt the same since.
Without another word, you put the polaroid back and shake your head.
“Is that everything?”
You turn around and see Lando smiling softly, his arms crossed as he leans against the doorframe. He drove here with you this morning so you could finally get your things out of Evan’s apartment.
Since the breakup, you’ve been staying at his place.
Not because there was anything between the two of you. At least, not something either of you was willing to admit, but Lando never would’ve let you sit alone in a hotel after everything that happened.
“Almost.” You walk back into the bathroom, grab your hair products, and place them in the box as well. “Now.”
Lando nods, silently takes the box from your arms, and lifts it. “I’ll take this downstairs first. I’ll be right back.” He leans down and presses a quick, reassuring kiss to your cheek before slipping out of the apartment.
The moment the door clicks shut, you hear a voice behind you. “Can we talk?”
You close your eyes for a moment before slowly turning around to face him. Evan is standing in the living room, his hands shoved deep into his pockets as if he isn’t even sure he wants to be here.
“I don’t think there’s anything left to say, Evan.”
“Please.”
You glance toward the apartment door before crossing your arms. “Five minutes.”
He nods slowly. His eyes linger on the hoodie. Light blue. Way too big. And across the back, in large letters, it's Lando's name. A bitter smile crosses his face.
Of all people, Lando’s hoodie. The hoodie of his favorite driver. “I thought you didn’t even like Formula 1.”
“I never understood it before. Turns out it’s a lot more fun when you watch it with the right person.”
“And why are you wearing his hoodie?”
You cross your arms. “You’ve got exactly five minutes, Evan. Is that really what you want to talk about?”
His shoulders slump. “Baby…I know you’re angry. But can’t we just start over?” An incredulous laugh escapes your lips. “Are you serious? You cheated on me.”
“What happened with her…it was a mistake.” He lowers his gaze for a moment. “But I’m glad it happened.”
You stare at him in disbelief. “Excuse me?”
“Because it showed me how I really feel.” He looks you straight in the eyes. “It’s you. It was always you.”
“You should’ve realized that while we were together.” Your voice turns sharper. “Instead, you chose both, me and some random girl.”
“Yeah, but-”
You raise your hand. “No. What you did wasn’t some realization. It was lying. And cheating.” You try to walk past him, but he steps into your way. “I was tempted by someone else. But she wasn’t as good or as loyal as you.”
A dry laugh leaves your lips. “You mean she was smarter than I was. Let me guess. She dumped you the moment she realized what a terrible person you are. And now you’re crawling back to me.”
His face flushes red. “See? That’s exactly what I mean! If you weren’t always so mean and sarcastic, then I wouldn’t have-”
You take a step toward him. “You wouldn’t have done what? Cheated on me?” He grabs your wrist. Hard. “Just listen to me.”
You try to pull free. “Let go of me!” But his grip only tightens. “Just one min-”
Before you can react, Evan’s hand is ripped off your wrist with such force that he stumbles back. In the blink of an eye, Lando is standing between you. His chest rises and falls heavily. His jaw is clenched, hands balled into fists. “When she tells you to let go, you let go!”
