At last they passed into a wide tunnel, cut through white stone, very wide and high. Huge blocks of shell were set in the roof, and the place was very dark. Soon they came slowly to yet another archway, where huge sea urchins were clustered in thick bushes, their white spikes shining in the darkness.

Beyond was another dim but open space, full of rocks and plants of very strange shapes and colours: bright red, emerald green, blackish purple, and glowing faintly. They came, in the faintness of the light, at last to a rock house, a great white sea-urchin in whose doorway a lantern hung. They drew up by the porch, and the sea witch came out to meet them.
