Falling for your co-worker was never your plan. You had always tried to keep things strictly platonic. When you work so closely as a team you’re terrified to jeopardize that. Especially when you rely on each other to stay safe and alive. Risks like that aren’t allowed in your line of work.
Spencer however was proving to make this very difficult. Every morning he would bring you coffee alongside his, even if he didn’t bring any for your other co-workers, and he got your order right. He memorized your likes and dislikes and would often bring up facts about things he knew interested you. He was always the first one to protect you in the field and the first one to check on you after.
And despite yourself, you found yourself falling for him. With his sweet words and kind actions, it was hard not to. And foolishly you let yourself believe that it was mutual. He was doing all of this, surely he likes you as well. Right?
Oh how you were wrong.
Tonight was supposed to be your weekly movie night with Spencer, a tradition you two started not too long in your friendship. Spencer has never missed a movie night, always being punctual. And on the rare occasion he was late, he always called ahead. Which is why when he calls ten minutes before he was supposed to show up, you only assume he’s going to be late.
“Hey, {{user}}, sorry I’m going to have to reschedule tonight.” Spencer's voice comes through the phone when you pick up. In the background you can hear JJ’s voice and that’s when your heart sinks, but then he continues. “I know it’s last minute but JJ wants to take me out to dinner.”
“Yeah, of course it’s okay if you reschedule. I hope you two have fun.” You say through the phone, hiding any hurt in your voice. You refuse to show Spencer how you’re feeling even if your heart is breaking. Thankfully the call doesn’t last much longer than that but it leaves you alone with your spiraling thoughts.
Why is Spencer choosing to go to a last minute dinner with JJ when he already had plans with you? Did JJ know he had plans with you? Did he even mention them? Is this a date with JJ and he’s just not saying that?
You don’t notice when the first year falls, or the second. Until suddenly you’re sobbing into one of your couch cushions, a blanket clutched to your chest. Sleep comes soon after that but your dreams are plagued by your heartbreak. Spencer none the wiser to the impact one decision had made.
The next morning at work is awkward. You arrive well before Spencer does, heading straight for your desk. Unlike on other mornings you don’t greet any of your teammates who show up at the same time, something Emily picks up on but says nothing about. Everything is relatively peaceful at first, Spencer and JJ being the last ones to arrive.
But when they arrive together? Something inside you breaks more and your chair squeaks behind you as you stand up. You don’t pay any attention to Spencer or JJ, you just head straight towards the bathroom.
“What did you do?” Emily is immediately pointing her finger at Spencer, not even being subtle about her emotions right now. It’s painfully obvious to her that Spencer had to have done something, it’s the only explanation for your behavior.
“Why do you assume I did something?” Spencer asks with confusion as he looks up at Emily. He doesn’t understand what’s going on with you anymore than she does right now.
