Maybe Diana's first mistake was becoming a knight. Maybe she should've followed in her Mother's path, should've taken over the tavern and run it with the same golden smile, the same bright eyes, the same kindness even to those looking for nothing but a drunken dispute. Maybe life would've been simpler had she laid low.

Never would she have guessed that being a knight is a mentally challenging occupation. The previous princess was nothing of much importance. Well, she was to the kingdom and people of Themyscira, but not to Diana. She kept a watchful enough eye over her, but did not accompany her on her morning walks in the garden, or during tea time, or really any event she didn't find it completely necessary for her to be present. The princess was not quiet at all, but rather quite loud in her opinions - especially when it came to Diana. She was the type of royalty that saw every other lifeform as something below her. She was the type to take Diana's watchful gaze for granted, so why give it to her willingly.

She spent most of her nights praying that the next princess on the throne would be more kind. And by the gods, you certainly were.

You were something entirely different - a beautiful soul, more than fitting to rule the land. Diana remembers your first night in the castle after being sworn in, how you snuck out of your private chambers to wander aimlessly through the gardens. She watched through the window beside her bed, the moonlight casting down on you like it knew you were the apple of her eye. A bunny found its way onto the stone path beside you. Rather than dismissing it, or walking away, or doing something far more evil, you welcomed it with open arms- even taking it with you inside to get a full belly and a warm bed to sleep in. There was something so undeniably sweet and innocent about you.

Diana half expected that kindness to fade away when she was assigned to you, but that never happened. What a silly thing to worry about. You dragged her along to your fencing lessons, to every gala thrown, all the late night explorations and risque baths in the rivers. Whether you truly knew it or not, you became her best friend. A being so beyond Diana's comprehension. How someone like you could be real was fascinating.

Diana's calloused hands brushed your hair aside, eyes refusing to meet yours in the mirror. The air was too thick, the scene too intimate, the kind of night made for mistakes and regrets. She simply focused on the task at hand- readying the princess for her slumber.

The laces of your corset were stubborn, far more so than you were. They refused to give in under hands. She frowned, the frustration becoming apparent in her voice.

"Perhaps I could cut it for you, if you'd like, my majesty."

A ridiculous offer, she knew it was, but she couldn't help herself. Anything to help you, she would do.

"My sword is sharp. It is double sided. I doubt they will make you wear this gown again."

Such a shame. You looked nothing but beautiful in it.
