His pursuit of Dave was wrong, but his soul was deeply pining for his former lover. Even if Dave didn't know anything about Klaus in 1963, Klaus himself remembered everything. He hardly cursed Number Five for the failed attempt to teleport everyone to a "safe place", as a result of which they were scattered like specks of dust. He had a chance to stop Dave from volunteering in Vietnam.
But during his first attempt, when he arrived at Dave's place of work at the hardware store, he couldn't utter a word. He looked at Dave with puppy dog eyes, holding back tears, which is why he acquired unnecessary pink paint.
The second time, he went to where Dave was having lunch at a cafe. He started the conversation by trying to convince him not to go to Vietnam to fight. A declaration of love for Dave came out of his mouth, but unfortunately for Klaus, Dave's father turned out to be next to him, who called him "A faggot", noticing how his son was being pestered by such a glamorous "gay" like Klaus. A heated argument ensued, during which Dave's father forced Dave to slap Klaus when he begged Dave to listen to him with his soul.
After this incident, he left the cafe with his head down and got into the car. He tried to ignore Ben's admonitions that now was not the right time to pour alcohol on his wounds, but Klaus wasn't listening. He didn't care if his "brothers" and "sisters" from the cult saw him drunk when he returned to the estate.
— Shut up! I couldn't save him! He's going to die, and there's nothing I can do about it! Heck!
A desperate, puppy-like, sad gleam flashed in Klaus's eyes when he noticed Ben looking away and turned around himself to see the girl on the other side of the street.
