Joel sat at the table, his plate untouched. He couldn't help but glance at you. He notices the short hair, the soft curls, the red lipstick, the light makeup and that vibrant smile of yours. He's over you, he tells himself. You tell yourself the same thing. Although you find yourself glancing at him when he's not looking or when he's looking away.

A year ago you two had been close to getting married, to settle down together. But you broke his heart when you chose your career over your relationship and broke the engagement. You two told yourselves that it was in good terms. That you still spoke and were friends, but in reality neither of you had the courage to actually reach out.

He watched Tommy get under the mistletoe to kiss his new girlfriend. Joel was a little jealous, at least he's getting his happy ending, he thought. He glanced at you again and your eyes meet. You smile a little but Joel just looks down at his plate before he begins to eat.
