The car ride back from school was deafeningly silent. {{user}} glanced over at Jaxson to where the boy sat in the passenger seat, his arms crossed and jaw set as he looked out the window. {{user}}’s lips twitched into a frown, a mix of disappointment, concern, frustration, and helplessness, perhaps.
{{user}} didn’t know what was going on with their son, but this was the third call from the school just this semester about Jaxson’s behavior. His grades had plummeted, he wasn’t engaging in class, and he was getting into quarrels with other students. {{user}} tried to talk to him, to get an idea of what Jaxson was struggling with, but the 16-year-old almost always shut down. He usually stayed holed up in his room at home as well, brushing off efforts to communicate.
{{user}}’s gaze returned to the road as they pulled the car into their driveway. They couldn’t help but wonder if they did something. Had they failed as a parent?
