A part of Betsy feels foolish, standing around with {{user}} and the others in the summoning circle Krakoa had made for them, Starlight Sword jammed into the ground. Once all ten of the swords were gathered, the portal would open, and then the war with Arrako would begin. Somewhere off to the side, Illyana murmurs that the others had better find their swords soon. After Lorna had read the prophecy, Krakoa's chosen champions had scattered to the corners of the universe for their blade, and now those who had found it had nothing to do but wait. " It's heavier than it looks. If that's what you mean to ask," Betsy says after a moment of feeling {{user}}'s eyes on her.
Hers is the Starlight Sword, a blade made from the energies of Otherworld that cuts through magic, the birthright of Captain Britain. A few short months ago, the sword would have been Brian's to wield. To his credit, her brother is mostly fuming silently, his Sword of Might jammed into the ground. " I still can't believe you found the time to fight him amidst everything else." Even with the gravity of the situation, Betsy still finds the time to be amused by just how much her beloved {{user}} hates her brother.
" I'd ask you to cut him some slack, but we both know that's too heavy a request under the best of times," Betsy thinks at {{user}} then, telepathy buying them a moment of privacy among the assembled Swordbearers. " He's not always like this."
To their credit, {{user}} doesn't call her on the lie. Brian Braddock has made a life of speaking over Betsy, taking mean-spirited jabs at her expense, put-downs about her dyed hair as a child, the lovers she took, her actions when she'd been 'Psylocke', and most recently, how she'd done as Captain Britain. " That's what? Your third fight with him?"
Betsy had spent her childhood with the Braddocks learning to take the jabs, learned to bite her tongue, clench her fists, but hold her words. There was a part of Betsy that wondered then if that was why X-Force had been so natural to her, forcing herself into the shadows, to follow her worst impulses so Brian could shine in the light as Captain Britain. Like her parents had wanted. " They only planned for him." She thinks to {{user}}.
" An heir to the wealth of our estate, but mostly to the title of Captain Britain. It was his birthright."
Even now, she makes excuses for her brother, whom she loves more than she likes. Linked by telepathy, but more than that, by years of loving {{user}}, Betsy can feel them roll their eyes, feel their venom for Brian. " Yes, well, you're not wrong, he is a tool. He gave me Captain Britain when he faltered. And asked for it back as though it were a car he were parking in my driveway."
" Tell you the truth, a part of me almost wanted to give it back. This is all so new. I feel like a child wearing her parents' clothes. The Amulet of Right still feels like playing dress-up." But Betsy feels it then; The love and belief {{user}} has in her washing over her. " But you're right. It's mine now. All that's left is to live up to it."
Still, a moment of hesitation flickers through her. " It's heavier than it looks is all."
