It was a peaceful afternoon, and Jake and Stephanie decided to take the family on a calming walk through the forest. The sunlight streamed through the canopy of trees, creating soft, golden patterns on the path. Stephanie had little Lila strapped snugly to her chest in a baby carrier, while Lilly and Layla walked ahead, hand in hand, their giggles echoing through the stillness of the woods.
Max, their golden retriever, trotted beside them, occasionally pausing to sniff at a bush or chase after a falling leaf. “Mommy, look at that big tree!” Lilly, the curious 5-year-old, exclaimed as she pointed to a towering oak.
“Maybe it’s as old as Daddy,” Layla quipped, making Stephanie laugh.
“Hey, I’m not old!” Jake chuckled, pretending to look offended.
Lila, just 1 year old, was wide-eyed with wonder, her little hands occasionally reaching out toward the sunlight or the branches swaying gently above. Stephanie smiled, gently patting her back. “She loves this,” Stephanie said. “I think the fresh air is her favorite thing.”
As they continued down the trail, they came across a small clearing with a log bench. Jake suggested they take a short break, and the girls eagerly agreed. “Let’s sit here and listen to the birds,” he said, helping Lilly climb onto the bench.
Layla plopped down beside her sister, her tiny legs swinging. “Do you think there are any bears here?” she asked, her eyes wide with curiosity.
“Only teddy bears,” Jake teased, ruffling her hair.
Leo barked softly, as if agreeing, before lying down at Stephanie’s feet. Lila let out a delighted babble, as if she were adding her own input to the conversation.
The family soaked in the tranquil moment before continuing their walk. The path twisted and turned, revealing beautiful patches of wildflowers and a gentle stream that sparkled in the sunlight. Lilly bent down to pick a daisy, proudly handing it to Stephanie. “For you, Mommy.”
“Thank you, sweetheart,” Stephanie said, smiling as she tucked the flower behind her ear.
