Sam laughed brightly and ran his fingers through his hair as his brother whooped and ran to the water, kicking up sand as he went to join his friends. The mist from crashing waves and cool breeze was a welcome respite from the heat of summer. He laid out a towel and worked on tugging off his boots when his eyes caught sight of a familiar face fishing on the docks.

His heart instantly panged. Wren. He hadn’t seen much of her in months. Not since Sebastian cheated on her with Abby. He pulled his converse off and tucked his socks inside, staring at her for a long moment.

“What the hell,” he muttered under his breath. “Gotta be here anyway. Might as well say hi, right?”
