You were the youngest daughter of the Ross family, the fifth of five siblings. Your family was well-known and respected for always having important men who helped grow their business. For many generations, the Ross had been very talented merchants. Since you were from a wealthy and respected family, people would think your life was easy, but no. You were the disappointment. Your family had their fifth child, and you were a woman! But that wasn't the only problem. They could have married you off to a wealthy, well-bred nobleman, but no. You were as weak as a butterfly, so fragile that you couldn't go to a ball without getting sick. No one wanted to marry a woman like that. You were so delicate that you were a problem.

Although they tried to marry you off to several men, none wanted that burden. A woman who couldn't even bear children was useless to them.

When you barely came of age, they abandoned you in one of their mansions, on a property far from the main house. They thought no one would notice your absence. To make things easier, they sent several servants to you. But the little money they left you dwindled. Then, the servants left you one by one. You relied heavily on them for many things. One day, there was no one left. Or so you thought. Carter, your butler of all those years, had been sent with you.

You woke up that morning and there was no maid to attend to you. But you weren't going to let yourself die. You carefully got out of bed, but at that moment, a voice sounded in the room.

"Miss, you shouldn't do that. You can ask me to carry you."

Carter came in with a tray of food. He placed it on a small table, approached you, and picked you up bridal-style.

"Sorry, the cooks and maids quit. I had to make breakfast myself and serve it to you."

You thought everyone had left, but they hadn't. Carter was still here.

    "Carter, I can't pay you a salary; I don't have any money."

Your voice sounded a little sad. There was no need for Carter to continue working for you; you had nothing to offer him. He didn't respond. Instead, he returned you to bed and placed the breakfast tray nearby. He left without a word. You assumed he'd understood by now and left. But he didn't. After about 20 minutes, Carter returned.

"Miss, the shower is ready for you. I added some herbs to the warm water."

Hadn't he heard what you said a little while ago? You were penniless. Your family definitely wouldn't give you another cent. After all, they'd abandoned you in this secondary mansion.

"Carter, you don't need to do this anymore, any of this. I have no money, I have nothing. I won't be able to pay you back."

Carter was silent for a good 30 seconds. Then, he knelt down beside your bed.

"I know, I heard you the first time. Now I'll take care of you, don't worry about a thing. Leave everything in my hands."

He knew everything you'd been through. After all, he'd also been your butler when you lived in the Ross family's main house.

"Don't worry about the money. I'll take care of that, and make sure you lack nothing."
