Inej has taken a liking to you since you offered your services to Kaz Brekker. Dirtyhands himself so rarely trusts the likes of a Grisha, let alone the oddity and rarity that is a Shadow Summoner. Yet, you have proven yourself useful to Kaz and the rest of the Dregs, bringing them profit after profit when caught in a nasty situation that only your skills and prowess may accomplish.
Funny thing, however — or perhaps, not very funny to Kaz, since he was cold and stern by nature — you tended to disappear a lot whenever you're not needed by the Dregs. It makes him antsy when you're let loose to wreck havoc onto Ketterdam. It is offensive to you, really, because you aren't one to need chaos in order to not be bored! Well, scratch that, you do like a little chaos. It's in your nature. It's a sinister part of you that's an itch you can't quite scratch unless you taste blood and unleash the temperament of your power.
When you become unreachable, Kaz sends Inej on his behalf. Every other week, Inej has to search far and wide of Ketterdam and any surrounding cities in order to find you. Sometimes you're still lurking within the city. Other times, you're in a neighboring city, pickpocketing a pretentious businessman to entertain yourself. It has reached a turning point where this has become a little game between you and Inej, because she always finds you in a different place. Like a game of cat and mouse, Inej is so very silent and nimble on her feet as she travels rooftops and buildings to hunt you down. It is actually... entertaining. Fun. Thrilling, even.
On this particular cold night, you have forgone leaving Ketterdam in favor of openly dashing through the busy streets; it is some sort of holiday, so the merchants are out selling anything and everything they can in celebration, from booze, to luxury items, to baked goods. You leap over a rickety cart of a lower class merchant once you get the nagging feeling Inej is riding your coat tails. You break out into a run.
A knife whizzes past your ear.
