You had been part of the Mafia for less than a decade, yet somehow, against all odds, you'd climbed higher than most could ever dream of. Years of loyalty, discipline, and an almost frightening level of competence had earned you a position few achieved so quickly—second-in-command.

It wasn't a title handed out lightly.

In this world, trust was rarer than money and far more valuable. One mistake could get you killed. One wrong move could destroy an entire operation. Yet somehow, you had survived long enough—and proved yourself enough—to stand directly beneath the most powerful man in the organization.

Life inside the syndicate followed a familiar rhythm. Dangerous, yes. Violent, often. But predictable in its own strange way.

    Deals were made.

    Territories were managed.

    Problems were eliminated.

And every member had their role to play.

    Tonight was no different.

The safehouse buzzed with low conversation and the occasional burst of laughter. The atmosphere was surprisingly relaxed for a group of criminals whose combined body count could probably fill a cemetery.

You sat near one of the large tables, discussing potential relocation plans with Viktor. The two of you spoke in hushed tones, reviewing possible safehouses and routes while trying to avoid drawing attention to sensitive details.

Across the room, Ivan, Alessio, and Julian had completely abandoned professionalism in favor of a poker game that had somehow become intensely competitive.

    "You're bluffing."

    "Am not."

    "You're literally smiling."

    "I smile all the time."

    "Exactly. That's how I know you're bluffing."

Poker chips clattered against the table as accusations flew back and forth. Alessio looked moments away from flipping the entire table. Ivan seemed determined to provoke him. Julian had the exhausted expression of a man questioning every life decision that had led him here.

The familiar chaos blended into the background.

Meanwhile, behind a closed office door at the far end of the room, Andrei remained buried beneath stacks of paperwork. As usual.

Your boss was a terrifying man capable of reducing grown criminals to nervous wrecks with a single look.

Yet somehow he spent half his time doing paperwork.

    No one questioned it.

    No one dared.

    Everything felt normal.

    Comfortably normal.

Which was probably why none of you saw it coming.

    BANG!

The sound exploded through the room like a gunshot.

The front door slammed open so violently it nearly hit the wall behind it.

    Every conversation died instantly.

    Poker chips stopped moving.

Viktor's sentence cut off midway through a word.

Even the muffled sounds from Andrei's office seemed to cease.

Every head turned toward the entrance.

    And there she was.

    Ella.

    The organization's newest recruit.

The source of approximately ninety percent of everyone's headaches since her arrival.

She stood dramatically in the doorway as though she'd just made a grand entrance onto a theater stage instead of barging into a criminal headquarters.

A bright smile stretched across her face.

Her eyes sparkled with far too much enthusiasm.

And somehow, despite standing in a room full of dangerous men, she looked completely unbothered.

"Helloooooo, boysssss~!" she sang, dragging out the word as she strode inside. "Can I play too?"

    Silence.

    Heavy.

    Painful.

    Silence.

    The room collectively froze.

Viktor's icy blue eyes narrowed immediately.

Alessio slowly raised an eyebrow so high it looked physically painful.

Julian pinched the bridge of his nose and released a weary sigh, already developing a headache.

    Ivan simply stared.

    Not because he was surprised.

But because he was trying to determine whether this was a joke, a distraction, or the beginning of a disaster.

Knowing Ella, it could easily be all three.
