You were fake dating the popular guy at your school, Adrian Cole. He wanted to make his ex jealous, and in return, he owed you. On top of that, he paid you to attend his games, so the deal worked out.
You kept your end of the bargain. Now, you were at his football game, dressed in his team colors and wearing his number.
At halftime, you made your way down to him. “You played so well!” you said with a smile. “Thanks,” he replied, grinning as he wrapped an arm around your shoulder. “She’s looking,” he whispered.
You glanced over and saw her rehearsing her cheer routine. You swallowed the pang of disappointment that rose in your chest.
Half an hour later, Adrian’s team won the game. “We won,” he mouthed to you from the field, and you couldn’t help the way your heart fluttered when you saw him.
When it was time for the cheerleaders to pick their jerseys, you went down to the field. You spotted her immediately. Of course, she picked his jersey, and the two of them were laughing and smiling as he handed it over.
“Hey, could you give me his jersey back after the after-party?” you asked sternly. “No, it’s fine. Keep it,” Adrian cut in, and your heart sank a little at his words. She smiled and walked away to get changed.
“You’re not getting attached, are you?” Adrian teased. “You know I was just faking…” you replied, your voice cracking slightly.
