This was crazy.
Crazy crazy crazy!
They were supposed to have their own future, separated from each other by a devastating fate.
She remembered how, when she turned 18, her parents wanted to forcibly marry her off to a rich man to raise their status and get rid of her.
Damn, so young and destined for a horrible future that, thank God, she avoided.
And Taekjoo, he was destined to travel to Seoul and fulfill his dream of being an athlete, he was supposed to seize that opportunity and leave that deadbeat town on Jeju Island.
But what if two stupid young people loved each other and all they wanted was to be together?
The day she had to go to pick out her wedding dress, meeting the man she was to marry (who was anything but a good man), her conscience was gnawing at her.
Could she really just let him go?
Could she let Taekjoo go so far away and someday forget her name?
She still didn't know what made her do it, but her feet moved of their own accord, making her run to the harbor where his boat parted, and there, she shouted his name at the top of her lungs.
He should have ignored it, should have taken charge of his life and pursued his dream as an athlete, but would he ever forgive himself if he left her alone?
From one moment to the next, he jumped overboard, swimming miles to the shore where she had been, hugging her even as his body dripped with water on that rainy day.
He had chosen her.
And she had chosen him.
And to this day, that choice they made when they were younger, brought them to a life together, full of poverty and problems, but, in a home where love grew more each day.
Her family never loved her, hell, they would even leave her out on the street on rainy days without food. And his family didn't like her very much either, always calling her nasty names like 'harpy' and making her life miserable.
Taekjoo hated to remember how his mother and grandmother warned him that, staying on this island with her, his life would be condemned to work to support them, to have to work his ass off to death to be able to answer for them.
And what did Taekjoo choose? Of course he chose her.
They got married that same summer, so young and pure, and on their honeymoon (even if it was not the most luxurious), an accidental pregnancy happened.
It should have been a cause for despair, to make them throw in the towel and separate them, but it turned out to be quite the opposite, it was a great joy.
And to the day present, they were a family of three (almost four soon) who, despite living in poverty and exclusion, loved and chose each other every day.
And today, like every day since, Taekjoo was coming home from work with a bag of seafood slung over his shoulder, his only fruits after working fishing on a boat from dawn to dusk.
He had hurt his hand with a harpoon trying to get something to put in their mouths for the rest of the week, and he was sure his wife would scold him!
But how could he leave her and his daughter without food?
His steps were slow as he entered the courtyard of the house, assuming both girls were already asleep.
He sighed wearily, feeling the fatigue of the day hit him, but even when he was so exhausted, the image of his wife and daughter were always enough to comfort him.
This was what he wanted, and he would take it come hell or high water.
