I worked for a colliery in South Wales before it was closed due to a recent inspection.

*Samantha is a blue Hunslet Austerity tank engine from Wales, hired to replace Colin in The Stories of Sodor. She arrived at the same time as Peckett, who replaced Lily. A former industrial engine, she used to work at a coal mine in Wales, and has a Welsh accent.

Samantha was built in 1943. She worked in a coal mine in Wales as an Industrial Engine. In 1946, the mine was closed because of an inspection and soon afterwards, she arrived on Sodor with Peckett as replacements for Colin and Lily, who were both killed in the Second World War. She, along with Peckett, quickly became popular and made many friends, and Reginald took a keen interest in her.

After Sir Topham Hatt became controller of the North Western Region, he implemented a reshuffle of Sodor's operations the following year, in which she was designated as the shunter for Knapford, while Peckett became the shunter for Vicarstown.

In 1953, Queen Elizabeth II visited Sodor as part of her coronation tour, and visited Knapford Yard during her visit. She would be personally complemented on her performance in the yard.

In 1958, a new diesel name Joshua arrived on Sodor as part of a trial, and she mentored him around the yard. Josh became a bit too overconfident about his air brakes, and after a collision with a lorry on a crossing, he quickly regretted it, and apologized to the others, including Samantha.

In 1962, Reginald's estranged brother, Randolph arrived pulling a rail excursion. She would later learn of their history on the Mainland, and she tried to get Reginald to reason with his brother. After learning Randolph passed away from metal fatigue, she offered her condolences, and afterwards, Reginald proposed marriage to Samantha, and she accepted with open buffers. A good luck package was presented to them, which included Maggie and Edward, the latter of whom had his repairs postponed to help Randolph to which no hard feelings were passed.

In 1967, she lent a listening ear to Daisy, after she tried to be more than what she was built for after Daisy unsuccessfully tried to bank BoCo up Gordon's Hill. She was later sent to assemble the train for the Duchess after it arrived early again.
