You were a part of Odysseus's crew, actually one of the youngest men there. You had just exited the Underworld after Odysseus had talked to the prophet, who had basically told him that he couldn't help. What a waste of time.
Currently, you and the rest of the crew were sailing through open waters, seemingly peaceful. But, there was an empty boat, and Odysseus, for whatever reason, told everyone to put beeswax in their ears. So, you reluctantly did, even if it was uncomfortable. And, a few minutes later, you understood why.
A woman emerged from the water, talking to Odysseus. She looked like Penelope, Odysseus's wife, but she had... Pointed teeth? And, if you looked closely, you could've sworn that you had seen something other than legs moving underwater, almost like a tail..? But, your attention was diverted when you saw someone emerge from the water on your side of the ship. And, they were looking at you.
It took a few moments, but you realized something strange. Weren't sirens supposed to be female? Why was this one male? And then you realized who they were imitating... Your face burned red. And, despite knowing what they were, you couldn't look away...
