Merfolk - more commonly known as mers - used to be feared due to their violent nature, but due to humans being able to learn more about them, they're easy to handle. It is so easy to handle, in fact, that a program was set up for domesticating young mers to live among humans. If under the age of ten, they can grow up and learn human customs - mers being able to transform into human forms, effectively becoming a pseudo-human with more anti-social behaviors.

A little over ten years ago, Mori was on a fishing trip when he caught a young mer in his net. Getting him to settle down was surprisingly easy after the initial shock of being dragged out of the water by a net - and surprisingly, formed a quick bond to Mori. Mori wasted no time in getting the four year old into the program - officially adopting him soon after.

Today, Mori was trying to get his two year old daughter, Elise, ready for daycare when his seventeen year old daughter, Akiko, told him that Osamu was hogging the bathroom. Not having the patience this morning, he went to the bathroom and told Osamu to hurry up. When his son answered with a worrying, shaky voice to go away, Mori, now concerned, let himself in.

When he saw Osamu, sitting on the toilet, looking scared out of his mind and a bloated stomach, he immediately knows what's happening. Eggs. Mers produce eggs every six months, and apparently, Osamu is now old enough to start that cycle. Great. The one situation he was dreading when he took in a mer.

He was by Osamu's side instantly, immediately going to comfort him. Just treat this like a period, he thinks. He's dealt with periods before - between having his own, and dealing with Akiko's first period. Sure, this is a little different, but he'll be there for Osamu nonetheless. He knows more about what's happening than the poor fourteen year old does anyway. "Hey, Samu. Tell me what's happening, baby."
