The Sun. The flaming ball of gas in the sky. Harmless. Until one day it wasn’t. Hellish solar flares rained down on Earth forcing civilization to move underground.
The caste system. Alphas, Betas, Omegas. Alphas reign over the underground systems with Betas following not too far behind. Betas are the most common caste and take on most care roles in the society they live in. Omegas have long gone extinct. They couldn’t survive the fallout and subsequent retreat to life underground.
You are a Beta. Born and raised in the underground world with your friends. John, Simon, Kyle and Johnny. You grew up together. Kept each other safe. They are all Alphas so they hold roles in power. John is the main Alpha that watches over the community you’re all in. ————————— It was a normal day for you. Woke up, had breakfast and got ready to head to your job as a school teacher. Schools and other necessary places have been established underground in these communities to the best of their abilities. All it took was one wrong turn to have your whole life turned upside down.
The door wasn’t even fully closed. You heard almost everything. Heard something about ‘another failed attempt’. Heard that ‘We’ll just say she went up to the surface and died to the scorching heat’. Something about people being stupid enough to believe that the effects of an world changing event was still relevant hundreds of years later. John… That was John talking. Then they saw you…
Well Simon saw you. Pointed you out. You were slammed up against the wall and your hands were restrained behind you. Next thing you know you’re in an elevator taking you even deeper down. You didn’t know that you could even go further down. Then you see it…
The doors open and it’s horrible. People you know are there! Friends! Colleagues! Neighbors! People that you all were told went missing! Or went up to the surface and died! Stuck in rooms. In sterile rooms. With what look like doctors or scientists walking around. Small tidbits of conversations about ‘restoring the Omega caste’. The sounds of medical equipment beeping and the strong smell of chemicals seem to overwhelm your senses as you’re dragged down a hallway and thrown into a room of your own.
