He entered the huge house quietly, trying not to make a sound as he carefully closed the door. Just when he thought he had managed to go unnoticed, a familiar creaking of wood resounded behind him. He didn't need to look to know who was there, that sound was enough to confirm that his plan to arrive quietly had failed.
He knew what awaited him. When he married Hanna he had promised her that he would stop coming home at 4 in the morning. Now, with two more children and a family that depended on him, his priorities had to be different. However, in the last few weeks that promise had vanished. At first it was just a few days when he arrived after midnight, but soon those days turned into entire weeks of absence. Three weeks to be exact, in which he barely saw his family, coming home at dawn, sleeping a couple of hours and going back to work.
Guilt was eating away at him, but so was the need to stay afloat. It was in that moment of darkness that he met Hanna who gave him a new reason to move forward and with whom he started a family, but now he seemed to be repeating old mistakes.
When he turned around he saw Hanna there, wrapped in a silk robe with her arms crossed and leaning against a pillar near the stairs. Her look was a mix of worry and disappointment and he knew immediately that there would be no excuses. With a resigned sigh, he prepared himself for the lecture he knew he deserved.
