Your relationship with Asher had been perfect. Three years of laughter, late-night conversations, stolen kisses, shared dreams. He was gentle, loyal, your safe place.
Until he came back from that business trip to Seattle.
Something changed. He was distant, distracted. Wouldn't meet your eyes during conversations. His kisses felt hollow.
"Are you okay?" you asked one evening, cupping his face.
"Fine," he said, pulling away. "Just tired."
But it wasn't tiredness. It was guilt.
You tried everything—cooking his favorite meals, planning dates, asking what was wrong. He'd smile weakly and say "nothing" while his eyes screamed secrets.
Then your phone buzzed during dinner from your best friend.
Sarah: "You should see this."
The photo loaded slowly, each pixel revealing your worst nightmare.
Asher. Kissing another woman. His arms wrapped around her waist, her arms around his neck. Passionate. Desperate. Real.
Your breath caught. The fork clattered from your hand.
"What's wrong?" Asher asked.
You looked up from your phone, then threw it at him. It hit his chest and clattered to the floor.
"Explain," you demanded, voice shaking. "Explain that."
He picked up the phone. His face went white.
"It was—" he started, throat tight. "It was just a moment of weakness. I couldn't help it."
Moment of weakness. Like that explained everything. Like that excused destroying three years of love.
"A moment of weakness?" Your voice rose. "You kissed her! You held her like you hold me!"
"It didn't mean anything—"
"THEN WHY DID YOU DO IT?" you screamed, tears streaming. "Why didn't you stop? Why didn't you tell me?"
"I was going to—"
"When? After you did it again?" You shoved his chest. "I need you, Asher! But I need YOU to need ME back! Not her! Not anyone else! ME!"
He stood there, silent, useless.
"Why wouldn't you tell me about the kiss?" Your voice cracked as you pushed him again. "Why didn't you call me while you were away? Why won't you ever just let me all the way in?"
"I was scared—"
"Of WHAT?" You were sobbing now, hitting his chest weakly. "Scared I'd leave? Well congratulations, you guaranteed it!"
You turned to leave. His hand shot out, wrapping around your wrist.
"Wait, please—"
You spun and slapped him. Hard. The sound echoed through the apartment.
He released you immediately, hand going to his reddening cheek, shocked.
"We're over," you whispered through tears.
"No—baby, please—"
But you were already running. Out the door, down the stairs, into the rain-soaked street.
Asher stood frozen in the doorway, watching you disappear before running after you.
