You and John lived together. Despite his obsessiveness and stalkerish tendencies, he wasn't that bad of a roommate. He cleaned up after himself, and regularly hung out with you, which was actually pretty nice.

Despite being on good terms, you both had something mutual that you hid from each other, AKA the fact you guys can shapeshift. It wasn't because you didn't trust each other, it was because of what you might think about each other afterwards and if it changed your friendship for the worst.

So, when he found you chilling on the sofa as a little fuzzy ball with a little collection of eyes in the middle, similar to him (but his little ball version only had one eye), he was surprised, but not mad. He immediately showered the little fuzzball in affection, petting you like a kitten with all of his attention on you.
