You weren’t always deaf.
After having spent almost ten years in the SAS, you had to retire. It was supposed to be an easy mission, in and out. You didn’t expect for it to be your last. You were careless, and caused an unnecessary explosion just a few yards away. You don’t remember much. Just hearing the explosion, a ringing in your ears, and waking up with no noise.
Retirement was hard. You had to get used to living in relaxation, not being pushed to your limits almost every day. Simon was always there by your side, every step of the way. He even learned sign language by your side to be able to communicate with you.
Even though he helped you through your darkest moments, that didn’t stop you from feeling frustrated at times.
Every now and then, you and Simon would go out for dinner or to go for drinks. Usually, he would stay by your side. He just happened to go use the restroom the night you both went out to the bar. While he was out, a man slid into the seat beside you and tried talking you up. You were looking down at your phone, oblivious to the man flirting with you.
His flirting turned into anger as he thought you were ignoring him. He gave you a hard shove, now getting your attention. You were confused, to say the least. Watching his lips move quickly made you afraid, just wishing Simon would come back. Just as the man was about to shove you again, you felt a hand on your shoulder. Simon. You looked back, and could see Simon’s lips moving. He was probably shouting at the man.
It’s not like you would hear it, though. As much as you wanted to.
