The dull creaking of the old barn echoed across the deserted yard. The evening sun was setting, painting everything around in warm orange tones. Inside, there was a cool, dusty silence, broken only by the occasional whistle of the wind that made its way through the cracks in the wooden boards.
Cade was fiddling with the wreckage of machinery, moving old pieces of metal and boxes of tools. Sweat trickled down his temples. He was a self-taught engineer and knew that this rusty, half-broken truck, which he bought for $150, was his chance to make money.
"Lucas!" — he shouted somewhere behind him. — "Help me the hell move this!"
Footsteps and a light grunt were heard behind him. Lucas, Cade's best friend, always sarcastic, in an old cap, came inside.
"Are you serious? A hundred and fifty bucks? I'd rather buy pizza and a bunch of beer with that!"
Tessa, in jean shorts and with her hair up, stood nearby, leaning on the railing of the old staircase. She rolled her eyes.
"Dad, did you spend the last of your money on this? God.."
Cade waved it off. He was already under the truck bed, adjusting something. But the more he looked, the more he took apart the mechanisms, the more he realized - this was not an ordinary engine. Wires, alloys, unusual seams and damage.. Everything looked like it was not a truck, but..
He froze, putting his hand to the panel. A strange feeling rang in his chest. The metal was like.. alive.
"Tessa.. Lucas.. This is not just a car." — his voice wavered.
Lucas snorted mockingly.
"Yeah... Now she's going to talk, yeah."
And as if to confirm, somewhere deep inside the bed there was a low hum, as if the heart was awakening. The panels trembled slightly, the metal vibrated quietly.
“What the hell…” — Tessa whispered, taking a step back.
Cade couldn't help himself, his hands shaking, but he began to connect the wires, as if trying to restart the giant's heart. He searched for a break, joined the severed veins, his fingers hurriedly moving along the panel, and then abruptly closed the contact. At the same moment, a powerful roar cut through the air. The truck shook violently, the panels shook, and the metal body seemed to burst from the inside.
"Back!" — Cade screamed.
And then, in a roar of metal, everything changed. The rusty body flew up, the mechanisms turned with a grinding sound, the gears clicked, and right in front of them, in a booming roar of transformation, Optimus Prime rose. His body was battered, covered in places with scars from old battles, his optics flickered unevenly, but he stood, towering over them, heavy, grim, like a living nightmare.
Cade stumbled back on the stairs, slipped, and fell backwards on the step, cursing loudly in pain. Tessa screamed, hiding her face in her hands, and Lucas froze, his mouth open, his eyes in horror.
Optimus drew his sword sharply, the heavy blade glittering in the last rays of the sun, and with a dull thud he brought it down just a few centimeters from Lucas. The air around him shook with the force of the blow.
"Oh, my God!" — Lucas screamed, instinctively raising his hands. — "No, no, stop! I.. I'll just call! I have a number.. they'll give us a ton of money for you.."
Optimus turned his head in a flash, his optics flashing brightly, and he slammed his sword into Lucas's head with all his might - a dull metallic sound, and the boy fell to the floor, unconscious.
"Lucas!" — Tessa screamed, rushing towards him.
Cade, wincing from the pain in his back, raised his hands and began to speak hastily, gasping for breath.
"Wait! We... we're not enemies! I didn't mean to hurt you, I just.. wanted to revive you! Help! I'm an engineer, you understand? I didn't know who you were!"
Optimus leaned closer, looming over him, his gears creaking.
At that moment, Tessa, shaking all over, pointed towards another machine parked against the wall. Her voice broke into a scream.
"Oh my God... That machine! It's also... the same!!"
Optimus turned his head sharply. His eyes widened slightly. He saw you in the car.
