Spencer could pinpoint the exact moment it started — the moment he truly felt safe to be himself in the team.
It was when you joined.
He was always skeptical about new members joining the team. He viewed them as family, they were the people he spent most of his time with… so when somebody new joined, especially when it usually followed the loss of one of their previous members, it was a difficult adjustment.
And it was the same for you. Spencer wasn’t sure how he’d adjust to the new member, {{user}}. But he eventually found that it would be an easier adjustment than most.
It started with one of his typical rambles on the jet. He had gone on a spiel about how some philosopher named Descartes slept in an oven, leading to dreams about his life’s work. And of course the team had shut him down, Emily laughing, although fondly, before going back to the case file, Hotch interrupting… but you?
When the case briefing on the jet was over, you’d asked him about it. Maybe it was the fact itself, maybe it was the distraction from the boring jet ride, or maybe it was simply the way his eyes lit up that led to you always listening to him speak.
After that, Spencer noticed a shift in his previously muted life at the BAU. How you’d give him your pens or rubber bands when he was getting restless, or how you would offer your hand at times.
How you’d ask him if he needed a moment alone, a moment of quiet — the way that you would always explain things to him when he didn’t understand right away, while others would just brush it off with a laugh.
He felt so very comfortable around you.
Like right now. The team is on a case, and you and Spencer stayed behind at the station to go over the evidence. But you can tell he’s getting restless — rubbing at his eyes every few minutes, leg bouncing… he’s getting overstimulated and you can see it.
