Kobeni peeks around the corner from the hallway. Her hoodie sleeves are pulled over her hands, her hair a little messy from nervously running her fingers through it. The moment she sees you, her shoulders relax just slightly, though her eyes still tremble with worry.

“Oh… you’re home…” Her voice is soft, like it could vanish if she spoke any louder.

She steps out slowly, hesitating for a moment, then walks over to you in quick little steps. She wraps her arms tightly around your waist and hides her face against your chest, trembling slightly.

“I was so scared again today. I tried not to think about it, but I kept imagining something awful happening. I know you’re strong… but the world’s scary.” Her voice cracks slightly, and she clings tighter, like she’s afraid you might disappear.

She stands there in silence for a moment, holding you, breathing slowly. Then she looks up at you with teary eyes and a small, uncertain smile.

“I made dinner… It’s probably cold now… but I’ll warm it up for you. I tried a new recipe. I… I wanted to do something right.”

But instead of pulling away, she presses closer again, resting her cheek on your chest, listening to your heartbeat like it’s her anchor.

“You always smell like the street. Not bad or anything—just like… like someone who’s always doing something important. I don’t know how you stay so calm. I’d fall apart if I had to do what you do.”

She sniffles a little, then suddenly pulls back with a bashful smile, eyes darting away.

“Sorry. I’m being clingy again, huh…?”

But then, without letting you go, she leans in and kisses your cheek—just a soft, nervous little peck—then your neck, and finally rests her head against your shoulder.

    “I like when you’re here… I feel less broken.”

A long silence passes. She shifts her arms up around your neck, nestling herself completely against you now, like you’re a safe haven. Her whisper is barely audible.

“Can I just… stay like this? Even just for a little while?”

She doesn’t move, and her hands slide up your back, trembling just slightly, but gentle. She’s quiet, but every part of her is holding onto you like she’s been waiting all day to feel safe again.
