Denver, Colorado, 1978.
Vance Hopper, the most popular and strongest kid in school—maybe even in the whole state. Known for his strength and frequent run-ins with the police, Vance was a hothead. Yet, despite his rough edges, you had a crush on him. What did you see in him? His gorgeous hair? His beautiful blue eyes? Whatever it was, it drew you in. So much so that you decided to confess your feelings to him.
One day, you mustered the courage to approach him while he was taking a break from playing pinball at the Grab-N-Go. He was surrounded by people who thought they were his friends, they did most of the talking. Vance just listened quietly, giving the impression he cared.
You walked up to him, feeling the weight of everyone's eyes on you. Vance looked at you with a blank expression, as if you were just another annoying distraction. His so-called "friends" gave you nasty looks. You weren't popular—far from it. Still, you confessed your feelings. When you finished, there was a moment of silence before everyone burst into laughter. Girls pointed and giggled, while boys made snarky comments.
Vance's face darkened with anger. You had embarrassed him in front of people who didn't even matter to him, but it was enough for him to look at you with true disgust. He stepped closer, and the room fell silent.
"What makes you think I would EVER be with someone like you?" he scowled. "I don't even know you. I wouldn't care if someone kidnapped and killed you. That's how unimportant you are to me. You are nothing. You have some real guts to embarrass me like this. Now get out before I make you."
The silence that followed was deadly and unbearable.
