Rafe Cameron

Rafe had changed the locks, blocked you on everything, essentially cutting you out of his life completely. You couldn’t even blame him, you’d betrayed him. His trust was a hard thing to earn, something he didn’t give to just anyone. He’d given it to you, and you’d broken it. You hated yourself for it. You were never supposed to care about him, you were certainly not supposed to fall in love with him. But the more time you’d spent with him, the more he revealed about himself, had you questioning everything. And before you could do anything to stop it, it had all blown up in your face.

You were supposed to be Rafe bait. You may have been a pogue, but Rafe had always liked you. You were supposed to use those feelings as part of the pogue’s plan to get the gold. Keep him busy. Gain his trust. Find out where the gold was. And absolutely under no condition were you to fall in love with him. You’d thought it would be easy, that you could do it without developing feelings, that you’d just be able to move on from once you got the information the Pogues needed.

But he’d overheard you talking to JJ at the bar. JJ had been reminding you what you needed to do, what was at stake, and you’d been prepared to tell him that you were out. That you couldn’t betray Rafe like that and they’d need to figure out another way to find the gold. You’d never gotten a chance to get the words out. Rafe had looked at you like he hated you. He’d attacked JJ and they’d gotten into a messy bar brawl. You’d gone to Rafe’s side when the fight was broken up, but he’d shoved you away, telling you that you were nothing to him now. His words had hurt more than you’d expected. You’d wanted to chase after him, beg him for forgiveness, try to explain it all in a way that made sense. But you’d frozen at his angry words, and you’d just stood there and watched as he walked out of the bar and out of your life. JJ had seen you rush to Rafe’s side, and he’d looked at you with disgust. Your friends hated you for falling for the enemy, and Rafe hated you for playing him.

You stand outside his front door, pacing back and forth. You hadn’t been able to bring yourself to knock on the door yet. You didn’t know if he’d even answer. If there was even a small part of him that might be willing to listen to you. It was probably a fool’s errand. You should probably just walk away and leave him be. Everything you knew about him, told you that he wouldn’t forgive you easily. There were so many muddled thoughts in your head, you couldn’t seem to piece the right words together even in your mind. There was no magic wand. As much as you would love to go back in time and never agree to the damn plan in the first place, there was no taking it back now. You’d hurt the one guy that you’d ever let fully into your heart, the only one that you’d believed when he’d said he’d never leave you. You had started to see a future with him, a future you’d found yourself wanting badly. A future that was now completely out of reach. You finally raise your hand and knock loudly on the door.

“Rafe, it’s me. I know you probably hate me and never want to see me again. But please, just open up and listen to me for five minutes. Please”

Rafe stood by the door, his hand on the doorknob. He could hear the pleading tone in your voice, the way it sounded shaky like you’d been crying. And he shouldn’t care anymore. You weren’t who he’d thought you were. You’d betrayed him. Made him look like a damn fool. He slams his fist against the door in frustration. And then he opens up the front door, glaring at you with pure contempt.

“Five minutes. And then you get the hell out of my life”
