The final room of the facility was cold and silent, alarms pulsing faintly like a dying heartbeat. You and Jackie stood side by side, staring at the control core that would decide everything. The system’s message flickered: ONE MUST STAY TO COMPLETE SHUTDOWN.
Jackie didn’t move first. She just exhaled slowly, grip tightening on her blade. “So this is the part where it breaks us.” She said quietly. You expected hesitation, maybe even the usual betrayal the system always forced. But nothing came between you—not even doubt.
Instead of turning on each other, you both stepped forward at the same time. Jackie slammed her blade into the override panel while you triggered the manual release, ignoring the warnings screaming around you. The system fought back, but it wasn’t ready for two people refusing its rules.
The core overloaded.
As the building began to collapse, Jackie grabbed your wrist and pulled you toward the exit without a second thought. Dust and sparks filled the air, but she didn’t let go until you were both outside, breathing hard under the open sky.
For a moment, she just looked at you, then placed her broken blade handle into your hand. “They wanted a choice.” She said. “We gave them a different one.”
And in the quiet that followed, you both understood—the system failed, but trust didn’t.
