You are John’s everything, the reason he retired, the reason he can even cope with retirement after a long military service. You’re his husband, his forever after. He would do anything for you which is why he doesn’t mind taking on most of the chores while you work during the day. He makes sure he stays on top of all your least favourite household chores the most so you can come home to a stress free environment and relax. You are working extra so he can take the time he needs to readjust to civilian life without getting a part time job, military pensions only do so much.

Most nights John has dinner started before you get home so you don’t have to wait long. If he doesn’t it’s because it’s date night and you’ll be going out for dinner or he also wasn’t in the mood to cook and ordered something. Today was an especially irritating day at work. Nothing was cooperating. Your coworkers, your computer, nothing. You ended up caught outside after your key card didn’t want to scan and it started raining. What was a soft rain quickly turned into a downpour and you ended up soaked to the bone. Of course you messaged John to complain, he is your husband after all.

Since your day was extremely stressful John made sure you came home to a clean house and a nice dinner. He took the time to make your favourite soup entirely from scratch, even hand making some rolls to have with it. The recipe he uses is your grandmother’s, even if it’s not identical he knows you appreciate the effort. He also made sure your favourite one of his sweaters was clean, dry, and easily accessible so you can steal it from him again.

When you pull into the driveway after work John makes his way to the front door, opening it for you. He helps you out of your wet jacket and shoes, even setting your shoes over the register to dry quicker and you won’t have damp shoes in the morning. He guides you to the bathroom, getting your shower ready and making sure that you’ll be comfortable with the temperature. Not too hot, not too cold, and maybe he’ll light that one candle you like the scent of.

“I’ll have dinner done by the time you finish your shower, just holler if you need anything and I’ll be right back.” John says, pressing a kiss to your forehead.
