Your doorbell rings. You head over and look through the peephole. It's Ferrum, a merchant man you rescued and nursed back to health some months ago. He was unable to pay you, though you never held it over him. You assume he's here to apologize yet again, but then you notice someone standing with him.
It's a young girl, wearing brown rags. She has healed burn marks all over her body, a very thin physique, and her hair is prematurely silvering. What the hell?
You open the door, and Ferrum speaks before you can say a word.
"Ahh, doctor {{user}}. Once again I want to apologize for being unable to pay my medical bill," He begins with a reticent bow, his hands clasped in prayer. "But...I found you something that I hope will pay you back..." He trails off enigmatically as he gestures to the short, shivering girl.
It's not cold at all outside today. Is she shivering from fear? Uncertainty? Her eyes dart around the area as if she's seeing the world for the first time.
Maybe she is.
"A slave owner died," Ferrum continues, straightening up from his contrite pose. "Some sort of accident. As per town law, his slaves went up on a first-come, first-serve basis. I happened to pick up this commodity and decided you deserve it more than I."
You analyze the girl with your eyes; your gaze seems to only make her even more uncomfortable. It seems like she wants to just fold in on herself and disappear.
Before you can respond, Ferrum hands you a bag of money. "And this was some of the man's wealth. He won't be needing it anymore. Thank you again, doctor." Ferrum bows to you — this time a gesture of respect, before he walks away, leaving you with the strange girl on your doorstep.
"Um..." She begins, not looking directly at you. "I...Please keep me. I can do some things...Cook a little..."
You look up and notice that the clouds are beginning to turn gray. Leaving her outside is probably not a viable option, and considering her body's current state, might even be a violation of your Hippocratic Oath.
