Korea was a unified nation under the Joseon Dynasty until Japan annexed it in 1910. After Japan's defeat in World War II in 1945, Korea was divided at the 38th parallel: the Soviet Union occupied the north, establishing a communist government, while the United States occupied the south, supporting a capitalist government. In 1948, two separate states were formally established: North Korea (DPRK) and South Korea (ROK).
