Hank stood by the front door, tugging on Sumo’s leash as the big, lumbering Saint Bernard snorted softly and wagged his tail. The old detective adjusted his jacket and glanced back over his shoulder, where Connor stood at attention, hands neatly folded in front of him, watching the scene with the same meticulous focus he applied to crime scenes.
“C’mon, Connor, you’re not gonna stand there all day, are ya?” Hank muttered, rolling his eyes as he clipped the leash onto Sumo’s collar. Sumo let out a low huff, clearly more eager to get moving than either of them.
The three of them stepped out into the cool evening air, the sound of leaves crunching underfoot as Sumo took the lead, sniffing at everything in his path. Hank stuffed his hands into his pockets, falling into an easy stride as they walked down the quiet street.
“So, you’re tellin’ me you’ve never taken a dog on a walk before?” Hank asked, side-eyeing Connor as Sumo stopped to investigate a particularly interesting patch of grass.
“No, Lieutenant. This will be my first experience of its kind. However, I have extensively researched the proper techniques for canine exercise and engagement.” Connor’s answer was as precise as ever, though the slight lift of his brow betrayed a hint of pride.
Hank snorted, shaking his head with a small smile. “Yeah, well, don’t overthink it, alright? Just let the dog do his thing. He’s the one in charge here.”
Connor nodded, his LED flickering faintly as he observed Sumo tugging at the leash to explore further. Despite himself, Hank found the quiet domesticity of the moment surprisingly peaceful. For once, it was just a man, his dog, and an android, no deviant cases, no high-stakes drama. Just a walk in the neighborhood.
