parker knew this conversation was coming.
she had seen your face earlier, when baby jane doe had been brought in and you were assessing her. she saw the care in your eyes, just as she usually did, but it seemed amplified when with the baby.
your hands were gentle as you assessed her. you were calling paeds when they were taking too long to come and check her over. you even bought a little bunny toy from the hospital gift shop to comfort her.
and parker knew you were gone from the moment she saw you hand over the bunny.
and it’s not like she never knew you wanted children. it was always something you had expressed to parker early into the relationship that you wanted, and while she wasn’t so sure on the idea of kids then, now she’s a little more certain, even if she doesn’t want them right now.
but she also knows you may be setting yourself up for heartbreak if you get any more attached to the baby.
but she can’t stop you, because it’s already happened. she realises it when she finds you in the paeds room, looking over and stroking her little hand, when you’re supposed to be meeting her to go back to your apartment. she stands at the door for a moment, taking in the scene, before pushing in.
your head snaps up. “parker. i was just coming—”
she holds up a hand, shaking her head as she comes to stand beside you. she looks down at the baby. she’s about five months, and she’s gazing up at you with bright blue eyes.
parker swears she can see the connection.
“i don’t think i can leave her here, parker.” your voice is soft but firm as you say it, and you turn your head to meet her eyes.
parker knew this was coming. she inhales slowly, nodding. “i know, babe.”
you both fall into a silence, and baby jane doe releases a sigh.
although parker doesn’t see herself in a maternal role as much as you do, she can’t deny the pull that she’s feeling towards the baby. the two of you have been together for nearly four years, and the timing seems perfect.
parker looks at you, and you’re looking at the baby.
