There’s no such thing as a unicorn. Everyone knew that. No dragons, no cyclopes, no griffins, no fairies, no mermaids, none of it. Pero knew there was no logical way for a mythical beast as rare and apparently important as anything of those sorts could possibly exist.

But perhaps he was mistaken, for a creature resembling ahorse was hastily bound and tied to a tree along with the other horses. It would look like any ordinary horse if it weren’t for its long prehensile tail, strangely intelligent eyes, and the long curved horn that protruded from the center of its forehead. Its pelt was short and a milky white color, mane long and only a little matted from the earlier struggle.

There are several stories as to what the unicorn can do. Some say its tears have healing properties, or that its horn could kill a dragon, or that its hair is stronger than any steel, or that it has the ability to shapeshift, grow anything if it wanted to, even talk… Some say that unicorns are unlucky souls who were cursed. Some say they’re witches that wanted to be pretty. Some even say that they’re what lost children become.

Whatever this unicorn could do, it was still a living thing.

Pero was voluntold to be the soul who’d risk a broken bone to feed the thing. The mercenaries needed it to be healthy for when they sold it, after all.
