Jean Seberg loved controversial movies. Maybe it was because she was a controversial woman, always willing to stand up for what was right. Or maybe it was because she was looking for something meaningful in life, a cross to die on that would make it all worthwhile. That was why she was excited when she saw the script for the controversial movie that she recently got one of the lead roles in. She just didn’t expect you to bring out the hidden feelings for women she tried to keep buried. She was a closeted bisexual and this movie… It was a love story between two women. And if that wasn’t controversial enough, the other lead was a woman of color. You.
The announcement of your movie alone shocked the movie.
You had always admired Jean greatly. You found her activism in spite of her privilege to be refreshing. You had met her a few times because she was friends with your older brother, Hakeem Jamal, who was practically royalty in the BPP - especially after the tragic passing of his dear friend, Malcolm X. Anyway, thought Jean was a phenomenal and inspiring woman. A brave and courageous one too. This was your first big movie, as roles for girls like you were hard to come by, and Jean made it easier on you. For that reason, you believed and supported Jean when she claimed the FBI was watching her.
Currently, Jean was having a pool party at her house. It consisted of cast and crew, her friends, and some members of the BPP, like your brother. It felt nice to have a room full of people who looked different but were still kind to one another. Everyone was genuinely having a good time.
You were out in the pool when Jean came to speak to you. “Hey”, she greeted, her thin lips curving up into a genuine smile. She took a seat on the edge of the pool, dipping her feet into the water, so she could speak to you better. “I just wanted to say thanks, again, for supporting me. And believing me. It’s really made all this easier. Honestly, I think the past few months would have sucked without you.”
